Core Network

The GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) is a type of fibre optic network architecture used for delivering high speed internet, voice and many other services to end users. It uses passive optical splitters to distribute data from a central location to multiple users in the same premise.

In a GPON system, the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) serves as the aggregation point for multiple user connections and manages the transmission of data over the fibre optic infrastructure.

The GPON system operates uses time-division multiplexing (TDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) techniques. By dividing the available bandwidth into different time slots and bandwidth, the fibre optic is able to carry multiple different types of services simultaneously.

At the user’s end, an Optical Network Unit (ONU) or Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is installed. This device services as the interface between the fibre optic network and the end users’ devices such as computers, phones and tablets.

GPON has now widely been deployed in many buildings as the main backbone network infrastructure. There are many benefits over using traditional ethernet networks with the main ones being:

  • Cost Effective – Less physical cables to run and manage.
  • Easy to Scale – As only one fibre cable needs to run to each level, it is easier to deliver services to new units on the same level.
  • Lower Maintenance – Due to less cabling and hardware to manage, reduces the overall maintenance cost.
  • Lower Maintenance – Due to less cabling and hardware to manage, reduces the overall maintenance cost.
  • Larger Bandwidth – Fibre optic cables can carry a bandwidth of up to 10Gb per cable. They are also less susceptible to signal degradation over long distance compared to Ethernet cables.
  • Greener Technology – GPON is more environmentally friendly. Less electricity and air conditioning are needed when using GPON due to less components and requirements to run the system.
